$58.75 in tolls has to come out of the rate. Our dispatchers count tolls when they price a load, and plan loads around your hours and home time. Dispatch runs 5% of gross for one truck, and you confirm every load.

Tolls are easy to forget when you look at a rate, and expensive when you do not. One run across Ohio and Pennsylvania can cost more in tolls than a night in a hotel. This truck toll cost estimator adds up the toll roads on a run, compares the transponder rate with cash or toll by plate, and turns it into a monthly and yearly number you can price into your loads.
Why a single national toll estimate does not work
Every toll road prices its own way. Some charge by distance, some by plaza, some by direction. Most class trucks by axle count, and some also by height. And they change: many schedules step up every January. So this tool does not guess a national average. You enter each toll for your class from the toll authority's own calculator, or start from a dated preset we checked against the authority's release.
Two examples from 2026 show how different roads can be. The Ohio Turnpike raised tolls 2.7 % increase on Jan 1, 2026 and prices a full Class 5 trip differently by direction, because westbound traffic pays a flat round-trip toll at the Eastgate plaza. The Pennsylvania Turnpike charges by distance and segment, and its Toll By Plate rate is double the E-ZPass rate. Its PA TOLL PAY app takes 15 % off monthly Toll By Plate invoices.

How it is calculated
- Per run: the tolls for every road you list, added twice: once at the pass rate and once at the cash or plate rate.
- What you pay: the pass total if you run a transponder, otherwise the cash or plate total.
- Month and year: your per-run toll times runs per month, then times 12.
- What a pass saves: the difference per run, times runs, times 12.
- Per mile: if you enter the run's miles, the toll divided by miles, so you can carry it into your cost per mile.
Rhode Island truck tolls
Rhode Island is the unusual case: its RhodeWorks program tolled only large trucks, at gantries on bridges. After years in court, the latest ruling we checked is clear on the law: First Circuit (Dec 6, 2024) upheld the RhodeWorks truck tolls but not the daily caps. Whether the state has turned the gantries back on is not yet verified, so check RIDOT before you route through.

What a good and a bad result look like
A good result is a toll line you know before you book, priced into the rate, with a pass that pays for itself many times over on your regular lanes.
A bad result is finding the tolls afterward. A run that looked fine at the rate per mile can turn thin once tolls come out, especially paying by plate. If the yearly toll number surprises you, compare a toll-free route against the time it costs on the clock, and ask brokers to cover tolls on lanes where there is no real alternative.
Where tolls fit in your numbers
Tolls are an operating cost like fuel and per diem. Our guide to the best toll pass for truckers compares the main transponder options, and trucker discounts covers other ways to cut the cost of a run. Add your nights away with the truck driver per diem calculator, and if you are quoting freight directly, the freight shipping cost estimator shows how tolls fit into a full price.
Counting tolls before you say yes is part of how our dispatchers price a load. They check the route, the tolls and your hours, and the final call is always yours: you confirm every load and the rate con comes to you. See how dispatch works for owner operators, or apply in about two minutes.
Questions about this calculator
Is there a free semi truck toll calculator?
Yes, two kinds. Most toll authorities run a free calculator on their own site that prices a trip by entry, exit and vehicle class; those are the numbers to trust. Routing apps can add tolls across a whole route, with some limits. This estimator is free too: it adds the tolls you enter, compares pass and no-pass rates and turns them into monthly and yearly costs.
How are truck tolls classed?
Mostly by axle count, and on some roads by height as well. The Ohio Turnpike puts high 5-axle and low 6-axle vehicles in Class 5, with low meaning under 7 feet 6 inches over the first two axles. The Pennsylvania Turnpike uses axles on some roads and axles plus height on others. Always pick your class on the authority's own calculator.
Does Rhode Island still have truck tolls?
Rhode Island built truck-only tolls under its RhodeWorks program. A federal court stopped collection in 2022, and in December 2024 the First Circuit appeals court upheld the tolls but struck down the daily caps. We have not been able to confirm whether collection has resumed since then. Check RIDOT before you plan a run through the state.
Is a toll transponder worth it for one truck?
Usually, if you run toll roads more than now and then. Pass rates are lower on most roads, sometimes by half, and toll by plate can add fees. Run your real lanes through the estimator: if a pass saves more in a year than its account costs, it pays. Our guide to toll passes compares the main options.
