Semi truck & trailer dimension checker: will the freight fit?
Pick the trailer or box truck and enter one piece of freight. The semi truck & trailer dimension checker shows whether it fits, how much room is left and how many pieces go in.

A load that does not fit costs a wasted trip to the shipper and a lost day. This semi truck & trailer dimension checker answers the question before you go: pick your trailer or box truck, enter the size of one piece of freight, and see whether it fits, how much room is left in each direction and how many identical pieces the space holds.
How wide, long and tall
Width. The federal limit is 102 inches on the Interstate and National Network. Enclosed trailers are built right up to it outside, so the inside is a little narrower: Wabash lists 101 inches, sidewall to sidewall inside its DuraPlate dry van.
Length. States may not limit a semitrailer to less than 48 ft on the National Network, and many allow 53 feet. Inside length is shorter than the outside length.
Height. There is no federal height limit; most state limits range from 13 ft 6 in to 14 ft. A dry van like the Wabash sheet's is 53 ft x 102-3/8 in x 13 ft 6 in outside, with 110.25 inches, front inside at the front.

Box trucks, reefers and open decks
Box truck bodies vary more than trailers. Morgan offers its Fastrak 26-foot body as 26 ft body: 96 in wide at 85, 91, 97 or 103 in tall; 102 in wide at 97, 103 or 109 in tall, so measure your own body. Reefer walls are insulated, which makes the inside smaller than a dry van's; we could not find a maker sheet we trust, so the reefer values in the tool are examples to replace with your own. On flatbeds and step decks the limit is the legal envelope: freight width against 102 inches, and deck height plus freight height against the lowest legal height on your route.
How it works
- Space: inside length, width and height for enclosed trailers, or deck length and deck height for open decks.
- Fit: the piece is tried as entered, then turned 90 degrees.
- Room: what is left in each direction; a negative number means too big.
- Count: how many identical pieces fit on the floor, times how many layers stack inside an enclosed trailer.
What a good result and a bad result look like
A good result fits with room to load, block and brace, and stays within the weight limits too; check those with the truck weight limit checker. A bad result fits on paper with an inch to spare, which in real life means it does not go through the door or the wheel wells. Over 102 inches wide or above the route's legal height means an oversize permit.
Dimensions matter after delivery too. Long rigs need long spaces, and our guide to truck parking space dimensions explains what fits where. A tape measure, a height sticker in the cab and load bars belong in every truck; see semi truck driver accessories. Bigger trucks also carry more fuel, which the semi truck fill-up cost calculator prices.

Questions about this calculator
How wide is a semi truck?
The federal width limit on the Interstate and the National Network is 102 inches, about 8 feet 6 inches, and states may not set it lower on those roads; Hawaii keeps 108 inches. Loads wider than 102 inches need an oversize permit from each state on the route.
How tall is a semi truck trailer?
Most dry vans are built to about 13 feet 6 inches tall outside; Wabash's DuraPlate dry van, for example, lists 53 feet by 102-3/8 inches by 13 feet 6 inches. There is no federal height limit. States set their own, mostly between 13 feet 6 inches and 14 feet, according to FHWA, and some roads have lower clearances.
How long is a semi truck?
The trailer is usually the long part: federal rules do not let states limit a semitrailer to less than 48 feet on the National Network, and many allow 53 feet. Add the tractor, whose length varies by model and setup, and check each state for combination and overhang rules.
How tall is a box truck?
It depends on the body and the chassis. Morgan, a major body maker, offers its Fastrak 26-foot dry freight body in heights from 85 to 109 inches, at 96 or 102 inches wide, and the chassis adds more. Measure the overall height of your own truck and post it in the cab; low clearances are the biggest risk for box trucks.
