APU ROI calculator: how fast an APU pays for itself
Enter what the APU costs, how many idle hours it replaces and what you pay for diesel. The APU ROI calculator returns the payback time and what you save over five years.
Defaults: DOE typical idling (0.8 gal/h, 1,800 h/yr), the DOE's 0.3 gal/h APU example and EIA diesel. The price and upkeep are example inputs; use your quote.

An APU does not by itself make you legal under every idling law (California has its own rules), and diesel APUs on 2007 and newer trucks need a particulate filter.

An APU pays back faster when the truck keeps working. Our dispatchers plan loads around your hours and home time to keep weeks steady. Dispatch runs 5% of gross for one truck, and you confirm every load.

An APU is one of the bigger purchases an owner operator makes after the truck itself. It promises lower fuel bills and a quieter, cooler bunk, but whether it pays depends on your own idle hours and fuel price. This APU ROI calculator compares the purchase price with the fuel and upkeep it saves, and tells you how many months until it has paid for itself.
Semi truck APU cost
APU prices vary by type, brand and installer. As one dated reference, a DOE fact sheet citing industry research from 2014 put diesel APUs at about $8,000 to $12,000 installed (2014 prices). Treat that as a starting point, not today's price: get current quotes that include installation, and enter your real number.
What you are buying is lower fuel use while parked. The DOE lists a diesel APU at 0.2 to 0.5 gallons per hour (diesel APU), against 0.6 to 1.5 gallons per hour for idling the main engine. Its own payback example, at $3.00 a gallon diesel and 1,800 idle hours a year, came to about 3.6 years.

How it is calculated
- Fuel saved: idle hours replaced times the difference between the engine's idle burn and the APU's burn.
- Dollars saved: gallons saved times your diesel price, plus any engine wear you value per idle hour avoided.
- Net a year: dollars saved minus the APU's own upkeep.
- Payback: the installed price divided by net savings a year, shown in months.
- Five-year net: five years of net savings minus the price.
Cheaper options to compare first
An APU covers heat, cooling and power. If you mostly need one of those, a smaller fix may pay back sooner. The same DOE table lists:
- Diesel bunk heater: heat only, 0.04 to 0.08 gallons per hour (diesel-fired heater), about $900 to $1,500 installed (2014 prices).
- Automatic engine start-stop: runs the engine only as needed, about 0.25 gallons per hour (automatic engine start-stop).
- Electrified parking space: plug in for heat, cooling and power, at about $1.85 an hour where available.
Enter one of those in the APU fields (its price and burn) to compare it on your hours.
What a good result and a bad result look like
A good result pays back well inside the time you plan to keep the truck, with room to spare if diesel prices fall. A bad result is a payback longer than you will own the truck, which usually means you do not idle enough hours to justify the price; a bunk heater or plug-in parking may suit you better.
Run your current idling through the idle cost calculator first to get your real hours. Then check how the savings change a typical load in the load profitability calculator. Cheaper fuel shortens payback too; compare fuel rewards programs for truckers and other trucker discounts.
Keep the truck earning while it pays back
Any upgrade pays back faster when the truck runs steady weeks. Our dispatchers plan loads around your hours and home time, chain reloads to cut empty miles, and aim each night at a stop that suits how you rest. You confirm every load and get the rate con yourself. Read how it works for owner operators, or send your application.
Questions about this calculator
How much does a semi truck APU cost?
It depends on the type and the brand. A DOE fact sheet, citing industry research from 2014, put diesel APUs at roughly $8,000 to $12,000 installed. Prices have moved since then, and battery or electric systems price differently, so get two or three current quotes that include installation. Enter your real quote in the calculator.
How long does an APU take to pay back?
It depends mostly on how many idle hours it replaces and what diesel costs. The DOE's own example, at $3.00 a gallon and 1,800 idle hours a year, came to about 3.6 years. At higher diesel prices and with a full year of nights, payback can be much faster. Few idle hours means slow payback, sometimes never.
How much fuel does an APU use?
The DOE lists diesel APUs at about 0.2 to 0.5 gallons an hour, compared with 0.6 to 1.5 gallons an hour for idling the main engine. Battery-powered systems burn no diesel while running but recharge from the engine or alternator while you drive. The calculator subtracts the APU's burn from the engine's to get fuel saved.
Does an APU make idling legal everywhere?
No. Many idling rules make exceptions for APUs, but not all, and California has its own requirements: diesel APUs on 2007 and newer trucks must have a particulate filter, and using one does not automatically make a driver compliant. Check the rule in each state and city where you park overnight.
